On our final full day of the cruise around the Society Islands in the French Polynesia aboard the m/s Paul Gauguin, we would be enjoying our second day in Moorea. If you missed our blog featuring our first day in Moorea and swimming with sharks, it can be found here. Today, we did not register for any of the shore excursion as we decided to take a casual approach to the last day of the cruise. The first order of business was to enjoy a leisurely breakfast on the rear deck outdoor veranda of La Veranda restaurant.

We then headed to the small boutique aboard the ship to shop for a Pareo and to see what else may catch our eye. They have a wide selection of shirts, dresses, jewelry (including black pearls), as well as many other items.

After a little shopping we decided to take the Tender Boat to Moorea and do a little exploring around dock. We never got tired of seeing the ship from the Tender Boat with the beautiful backdrop of the French Polynesian Islands.

Once on the island, we explored the small shopping area that was set up near where we were dropped off by the boat. Again, here there were wide selection of clothing and jewelry for us to peruse.

We then decided to go for a walk and explore a little of the island on our own.

As the afternoon approached, we decided to go back to the ship to enjoy lunch at Le Grill and to take part in some of the on-board activities. We returned to the dock to catch the Tender Boat and really appreciated the fact that the Paul Gauguin crew had set up some cold drinks for us to refresh ourselves with while waiting to be picked up (they did this every day, but I fear I may have forgotten to mention it previously).

While enjoying our drinks, we could see our ship in the distance.

At Le Grill, we had a fantastic lunch, the food at Le Grill was always great.

After lunch, Les Gauguines were providing lessons on how to make a textile bracelet in La Palette.

After a quick refresh in our cabin, we headed to the Pool Deck to meet up with some friends as the ship started to depart Moorea to take us back to the main port where we would disembark early tomorrow in Tahiti.

As we made our way to open waters, we were treated to a cocktails as the m/s Paul Gauguin Farewell Party began.

As the party concluded, we watched as the sun disappear behind Moorea in the distance.

During the cruise we had become friends with many of the other passengers on board and we all arranged for a large table at La Veranda to have our own little good-bye party over a great meal.

During dinner we made port in Papeete, Tahiti. After dinner we headed back to our cabin to prepare our bags to be picked up so that they could be unloaded by the staff in the morning. We only kept a small carry-on with the essentials needed for the evening which we would then take with us in the morning. We also arranged through the Paul Gauguin check-out checklist for a taxi to pick us up at the dock to transfer us to the airport

With our packing done we headed to one last show in La Salon: "O Tahiti E" presented by Polynesia's #1 folkloric dance troupe.

The next morning we had breakfast overlooking Papeete and said our good-byes to the crew and other passengers that we had become close to. We also exchanged some contact details from which we are still in touch with some of our new friends made on board the ship.

Once we were ready to disembark, our bags were ready for us on the dock, and our taxi was waiting.

There was also a shore excursion in Papeete which was "Le Petit Train" - a small, 1 hour train ride through Papeete with recorded commentary.

We had an amazing time aboard the m/s Paul Gauguin and on the 5 different islands we visited. We have created memories and friendships that will last a lifetime.

After 2 fantastic days in Bora Bora, we arrived in Moorea, the last island that we would be visiting on our Paul Gauguin Cruise of the Society Islands in the French Polynesia. Moorea is noticeably much more rugged and mountainous than the other islands that we visited during this cruise, but is one the largest with a total size of approximately 134 sq km and a population of just over 16,000. It boasts beautiful  white sand beaches and lush tropical vegetation that makes the island the perfect destination for exploring on land or in the water.

After our buffet breakfast in La Veranda (shown in previous blogs), we had a little time before our shore excursion in the afternoon, so we headed to the top 2 decks to take in the beauty of Moorea:

It was now time to take the Tender Boat to the dock in Moorea fro our shore excursion. With the beauty of Moorea, just taking to Tender Boat was a sightseeing adventure:

As usual, we had a wide range of activities to choose from in regards to a shore excursion in Morrea (I will list them all below). We chose "Morrea by Catajet" - the description reads in part: "Get an up=-close look at Tahiti's idyllic beauty from above and below sea level during this catajet and snorkeling adventure in Moorea...you will explore the beauty of the tropical fish an coral formations...you will have an opportunity to play with stingrays." I want you to remember the "tropical fish" part of that description as you scroll through the photos below...

We arrived at the dock and took another small boat to the location for our catajet tour:

But we were looking forward to the catajets. The catajet seats 2 people side by side and also provided a box for storage:

We spent some time following our guide around the waters of Moorea as he took us to different areas of interest. These catajets could actually move a pretty good rate:

With our exploring of the island complete it was time to do a little snorkeling among the "tropical fish" and play with stingrays. We could already see the stingrays as we arrived:

They were definitely friendly and we were also able to pet and feed them as well:

But what about those tropical fish? Well, they arrived pretty quickly after the stingrays were starting to receive their snacks from us. I guess these fish were hoping to have a little snack as well...

And here they are:

Yup... Sharks! The tropical fish were sharks. No, we were not told that there would be sharks, or that we would be in the water with them, or that the guides would be holding handfuls of food while feeding the stingrays (or as I mentioned to the guide.... chumming the water). In fact, we did not really encounter any other fish of note on this catajet tour. But once my shock wore off (as well as those of the other members of our group), it was a fantastic experience.

The one facing me in this photo ended swimming right past me with mere inches in between:

I talked to the guide afterwards about the sharks and he explained, that these were Blacktip Reef Sharks and (here is where it gets a bit sad) for decades groups like ours have come by multiple times a day and these sharks have, for lack of better term, become somewhat domesticated. A quick search on Wikipedia to read about them provided this "Timid and skittish, the blacktip reef shark is difficult to approach and seldom poses a danger to humans unless roused by food." Causes me to question chumming the water again, but... I totally felt safe while in the water with them. However, I do feel that there should be mention of the sharks in the description of the excursion or from the guides prior to instructing us to get in the water. It was however, an amazing experience.

Once our excursion was completed, we returned to ship and enjoyed the drink of the day by the pool while talking with many of the friends we had made over the past few days.

We had reserved a table at Le Grill (located on the pool deck) for dinner this evening and as our friends parted to leave for their respective dinner locations, we stayed poolside and took it a gorgeous sunset over Moorea:

I must say, the dinner at Le Grill stands out to me as my favourite dinner of the entire cruise. With the lighting, being outside with Moorea surrounding us on a perfect evening of weather, and of course the food. This is the dinner was truly special:

After dinner, we had made plans to meet some friends at the piano bar prior to going to that nights show in the Grand Salon. While at the piano bar, we were also entertained by Les Gauguines with an impromptu performance in the hall:

The show in the Grand Salon was "Te Mau Mama No Fa'Ato'Ai To'A". It was a great interactive show incorporating culture, songs, music and dance of French Polynesia:

We had a very eventful, and what I feel to be the one of the best days of our cruise in Moorea.

After breakfast, we headed down to the Tender Boat to head over to a small secluded beach

The wonderful thing about this beach was the shelf stretched out so far that you could sit comfortably, almost completely submerged in the warm French Polynesian waters.

You could even keep an eye on the ship...

Of course, the crew of the m/s Paul Gauguin made sure that we were able to enjoy complimentary drinks, snacks, and, if so inclined, do a little snorkeling, beach volleyball, kayaking, or do a little paddle boarding while on our secluded oasis:

With our day of relaxing in the warm waters and invigorating sun complete, we headed back to the ship to grab a quick afternoon snack at Le Grill:

Unfortunately, a light rain (sometimes a little heavier) began to fall in the mid-afternoon and we decided to spend a little time indoors. Luckily, there were plenty of indoor activities to take part in. There was a Pareo (traditional Polynesian dress) Tying demonstration, a Bridge/Euchre Tournament, a Galley Tour, an assortment of other games were avaialble to play, or what we did...

Every day there would be a new puzzle in the hallway on deck 6. We decided to see how well we could do. It was incredibly addictive and wouldn't you know it... we finished it.

Having snacked and eaten most of the day, we went to La Veranda to grab a quick bite for dinner:

We had a great time on our 2nd day in Bora Bora and looked ahead to tomorrow as we would be arriving in Moorea.

Day 4 of our luxury cruise of the Society Islands aboard the m/s Paul Gauguin brought us to the island that I had been looking forward to the most, Bora Bora.  Bora Bora is approximately 29.3 square km in size and has a population of almost 9,000. It is surrounded by a wide barrier reef for which there is only one entrance. The island itself is the eroded cone of a large and extinct volcano.

We were scheduled to spend 2 full days here and we had decided to make them as relaxing and casual as possible. After the cruise, we would be staying on Bora Bora for 3 additional nights so we decided not to sign up for any of the arranged shore excursions on either day. Having no set excursion allowed us to sleep in a little and head to breakfast in La Veranda after most of the passengers had already eaten and left for their excursions. Breakfast is served from 7:30am - 9:30am (earlier and later brekfasts are availble at the other restaurants and through room service).

You honestly can't get a much better view for breakfast...

After brekfast, we made our way down to the Tender Boat and decided to go into the main town on Bora Bora and do a little shopping:

I should mention, the Paul Gauguin would always have a nice area st up on all of the islands where the Tender Boat docked, Typically there was a few staff memebers, light snacks and cold (non-alcoholic) drinks available. Occassionally, as was tha case in Bora Bora, there would be some entertainment as well:

The shops in town were very typical from what you would find in most island tourist areas with items ranging from handmade crafts, clothing, to expensive jewlerey and native art items. We did not take pictures inside the actual stores, but here is a smple of the shops:

Some of our fellow passengers chose to rent a car for the day and tour the island on their own:

Nearby, there was also a grocery store, a pharmacy, a school, and this church:

There was also a nice view of our ship with a bautiful yacht anchored nearby:

After the morning on Bora Bora, we returned to the ship to have lunch at Le Grill:

As I mentioned in a previous post, the crew of the Paul Gauguin would offer a crafts lesson every afternoon in La Palette on Deck 8. On this occassion the lesson was pn making a Polynesian Hair Pick and a Pandanus Headband:

After the class, Pineapple Flambe was served in Le Grill:

After freshening up in our stateroom, we headed to L'Etoile for dinner on Deck 5:

The evening show in the Grand Salon was the "International Crew Show" which was very entertaing and so great to see a lot of the staff that we have gotten to know show off their hidden talents.

We set out to have a casual day in Bora Bora and it was exactly what we did. That is the beuty of the Paul Gauguin cruise, you can tailor your day to your own desires, as busy or as slow as you would like. We were having very similar thoughts for our second day in Bora Bora tomorrow!

After an enjoyable buffet breakfast in La Veranda, we headed to the the Marina aboard the m/s/ Paul Gauguin to pick up our complimentary snorkeling gear. We would be needing it today as our shore excursion included a tour of a Black Pearl Farm as well as snorkeling.

With our gear in-hand, we headed to the exit of the ship where we boarded our tour boat at 9:30am to head out for our morning excursion. Along the way our guide pointed out some of the scenic features of Taha'a, including various motus, vanilla plantations, and the visible mountain of Bora Bora in the distance.

We first stopped at a Pearl Farm where we we provided with the background and techniques of Black Pearl Farming. Black pearls do not, of course, occur naturally and are produced through an intricate process of insemination of an oyster and the careful operation of farming them in the ocean.

Of course, we had the opportunity to purchase some of these cultivated pearls:

As we waited for others to make their purchases, we were provided with iced drinks and fruit for a light snack:

The location of the Pearl Farm was absolutely gorgeous.

After completing the tour of the Pearl Farm, we we back in our tour boat and heading for our morning of snorkeling located in a lagoon near the La Taha'a Island Resort and Spa, a Relais Chateaux property (check out this property on my Virtuoso page here).

The water was so warm and clear, with an abundance of fish, creating a fantastic snorkeling experience:

As we returned to the boat, our guide showed us a Puffer Fish that he had found. He was very careful not to harm it and gently released it back to the water after briefly showing it to us.

Withe our morning excursion completed, we were transported to Motu Mahana which is Paul Gauguin's private island for a lunch BBQ and a day of relaxing on the beach and in the water.

After some time on the motu, we returned to the ship for a quick rest by the pool, as well as some desserts from the Le Grill restaurant.

In the evening we made our way to La Veranda for a wonderful dinner which was highlighted by the impeccable service of the staff (the Crème Brûlée for dessert was one of the best I have ever had!).

During dinner, we were also entertained by Les Gauguines with some dancing and singing.

At night, in the Grand Salon, we enjoyed a display of mentalism, magic, and illusions performed by Gustavo Vierini. Unfortunately, I do not have any pictures. He was also aboard throughout the cruise doing tricks for the guests at various locations on the ship.

We had a fantastic experience in Taha'a with a full day of awesome events. We couldn't wait to see what our first day in Bora Bora would bring tomorrow!

Every evening, as part of their turn-down service, we received a copy of the Ia Orana (YO-RAH-NAH) "Hello", which was a 4 page booklet providing information the Island we were visiting the next day with details of the island itself and the detailed timetable of the activities being offered onboard the ship that day.

We started our day by heading to La Vernada, where we enjoyed a buffet breakfast prior to leaving on our shore excursion.

Every day, if we were interested, there was a wide selection of shore excursions to choose from at an additional cost. We highly recommend that you plan and reserve these in advance before leaving home for your cruise to ensure you are able to do the ones that you are most interested in. You can always cancel or make changes once onboard (by noon the fday before the excursion is to take place). As you see above, on your first night, alpng with Ia Orana, you receive a envelope with the vouchers for all of the shore excursions you booked from home.

On this day, we chose to do a "Day at the Beach" at Hotel LaPita on Huahine. I will list all of the shore excursions that were offered in Huahine at the bottom of this blog. We took the Tender Boat to the Island and they a short drive on a bus close to where the hotel was located:

It is important to note in the picture above that every day the schedule for the Tender Boat was clearly indicated both on the ship and at the dock of each Island every day. It is your responsibility to ensure you are aware of the schedule as not to be left behind...

After th short bus ride, we arrived at a very small area of the Huahine with a few shops selling locally made crafts as well as souveniers. We then followed a small path along the beach to Hotel LaPita:

As part of our "Day at the Beach", we were provided with full use of the pool and beach as well as a complimentary lunch and beverage:

We really enjoyed our day at Hotel LaPita and in the late afternoon we took the Tender Boat back to the cruise ship.

We spent the remainder of the afternoon sunning ourselves on the pool deck enjoying the views of Huahine and sipping on the drink of the day:

Having had a beautiful lunch on Huahine, we decided to skip dinner this day and instead grabbed a small snack at the piano bar.

Every evening in the Grand Salon on Deck 5 there was acomplimentary event/show to attend . On this evening it was the Captain's Welcome Party where Captain Tony Mirkovic made a special introduction to the guests and introduced us to his senior crew.

Our first full day aboard the m/s Paul Gauguin was fantastic and we retired that evening looking forward to our next day in Taha'a.

As a Paul Gauguin Cruises PEARLS Accredited Partner, I recently had the incredible experience of touring through the French Polynesia on the their Tahiti & the Society Islands 7 Night Tahiti & Society Islands cruise. I will be writing separate blogs for each day and another separate entry on the restaurants/food on board the m/s Paul Gauguin. This first entry will cover some general information of the French Polynesia, the ship itself, the itinerary for the specific cruise we were on (Tahiti & the Society Islands - 7 night cruise).

First some points of information about the French Polynesia:

Where is it?

The French Polynesia is a group of islands in the South Pacific Ocean (actually over 100 Islands) spread out over approximately 2,000 km about. These islands are grouped together into 5 groups, one of these being the Society Islands (14 Islands in total). To give some perspective of where they are in relation to North America, New Zealand, and Japan, here is a image from Google Maps with pin marker on Papeete, Tahiti:

What is the climate like and when is the best time to go?

The annual average temperature in the French Polynesia has an approximate low of 23°C and a high of 31°C (73°F/88°F) with the temperatures varying just slightly from month to month throughout the year. The rainy season is typically from November to April, even then the precipitation is not that intense with the maximum average being approximately 235 millimeters per month during that time. There really is no shortage of sun all year long. With all of this being said, the best time to visit the French Polynesia would tend to be between May and October.

Currency?

Although most places we visited do accept American dollars (USD), I would highly recommend bringing along the local currency of French Pacific Francs (CFP), as we found that everything we purchased was cheaper in paying with CFP. Most items in stores will have both currencies listed and, by doing some quick math, it was clear to see that CFP was the cheaper way to go (sometimes significantly). On board the ship, all purchase are in USD and charged directly to your cabin. However, it would be wise to bring some USD cash along for incidentals and if you are looking to play in the casino aboard the ship.

The m/s Paul Gauguin:

The m/s Paul Gauguin is a small luxury cruise ship. It is small in size only, and that is definitely a bonus for the passengers, Check out this stat from their site:

• Capacity: 332 guests
• Crew: 217/International
• Crew-to-Guest Ratio: 1:1.5, one of the highest of any luxury cruise ship

Seriously, the level of customer service on this ship was incredible. I will definitely refer to this more in future blogs, but I could not believe how great the crew were. They knew our names by heart almost immediately, and were able to anticipate our needs to a degree that was almost scary.

The ship itself is wonderful. There are are 166 staterooms and about 70% of these come with a balcony - Category D and above. For those staying in Category B, or above, there is also a Butler Service included. We stayed in Cabin 623, which was Category D and located on the starboard (right) side of the ship.

The ship itself has 9 decks, of which decks 3 through 9 are accessible to the passengers. Here is a brief overview of each deck starting from Deck 9 and working our way down:
